Master of Steel - The Scotia
The Scotia was the first Canadian locomotive to be built with a steel boiler.
Built in 1861 atthe Hamilton shops of the Great Western Railway Company (GWR), the Scotia was designed by Richard Eaton, GWR's Locomotive Superintendant who had spent several years developing an engine that could replace woodwith a more efficient fuel - coal. In addition to numerous refinements in the locomotive's design, Eaton's new coal-burning engine was easily identified by its straight and very large stack which was in striking contrast to the flared shape and characterized wood-burning stacks.
The Scotia carried freight to major points throughout southwestern Ontario until it was scrapped in 1873. Nine years later, the Great Western Railway was amalgamated with the Grand Trunk Railway wich became part of the Canadian National Railway Company in 1923.
This coin is the sixth issue of the Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
