A Perfect Match: The Bumble Bee and the Aster
The North American species of Aster (reclassified in the 1990s to other genera, but still commonly known as asters) are flowering perennial herbs usually bearing a striking blue, mauve, pink, or white flowers. These lovely plants share an important symbiosis with bumble bees: the bees are one ofthe aster's key pollinators and for many bumble bees, asters are a major food source. Asters are also easy to grow and thus a great choice for Canadian gardeners. These relatives of the sunflower have a yellowcentre composed of minuscule seed-carrying florets that bumble bees love. Asters bloom from mid-summer to late fall, providing essential food for bees and a stunning show of colour for nature lovers.
This coin is the second issue of the Flora and fauna collection.
The first coin of the series, released in 2011, depicts the Tulip with Ladybug.
The second coin of the series, released in 2012, depicts the Aster with Bumblebee.
The third coin of the series, released in 2013, depicts the Purple Coneflower and Eastern Tailed Blue.
The fourth coin of the series, released in 2014, depicts the Water-lily and Leopard Frog.
