During the Second World War, the invasion of Holland forced its royal family into exile and Canada provided a welcome refuge where the honoured guests remained until the Netherlands were liberatedin the fall of 1945.
To express her gratitude, Princess Juliana (later Queen) sent 20 000 tulip bulbs to the nation's capital. Everyyear, more Dutch bulbs arrived and the breathtaking blanket of colourthat began to cover the city quickly estblished Ottawa as « The tulipCapital Of North America.»

Today, millions of Tulips go into bloom to celebrate the special friendship that Canada shares with Holland and other nations around the world. Ottawa's floral masterpiece has become an important Canadian rite of spring and on the 50th anniversary of its festival, 20 000 commemorative « Golden Tulip Coins » have been stuck - one for each of the bulbs that Princess Juliana gave to Canada more than five decades ago.
This coin is the first issue of the Golden Flower series.
The first coin of the series, released in 2002, depicts the Golden Tulip.
The second coin of the series, released in 2003, depicts the Golden Daffodil.
The Golden Daffodil has also been released as a pendant, complete with a sterling silver chain.
The third coin of the series, released in 2004, depicts the Easter lily.
The fourth coin of the series, released in 2005, depicts the Golden rose.
The fifth coin of the series, released in 2006, depicts the Golden daisy.
The sixth coin of the series, released in 2007, depicts the Golden Forget-me-not.
