Ribbons of light across the northern sky
Aurora Borealis

Canada's aboriginal history abounds with legendary spirits that filled the midnight sky with red, green, blue and white (even bright pink, blue or violet!). Today, modern science can explain much of the mystery behind these ethereal waves of colour, yet people are still draw to Canada's northern regions to experience this awe-inspiring, almost spiritualphenomenon for themselves.

While we can only see the aurora borealis at night, itis always there. The magnetic field that surrounds thos planet is constantly bending and stretching to shield the Earth from the powerful solar wind that comes from the sun.

When the solar wind and magnetic field meet, electricity is the result --up to one trillion watts worth! As these electrical currents travel towards the Earth, the magnetic field directs them towards the polar regions where they form a 3,000 km (2,000 mi) wide oval that reaches down to 100 km (60 mi) above the Earth's surface and extends far into outer space. It is within this oval that the particles carrying the electricity collide with atmospheric gases to create the ribbons of colour that have fascinated us since time immemorial.
