Celebratingthe 100th Grey Cup
The Grey Cup is more than a trophy: it is an iconic symbol for Canadians. The Grey Cup game, the championshipof Canadian professional football, is the country's single largest annual sporting event, attended by thousands and watched by millions every year. The week-long celebration that surrounds it has become one ofCanada's most significant cultural rituals. And the lore that envelopes them both is an integral part of the Canadian history.
[...]
The first Grey Cup game took place at Rosedale Field in Toronto in 1909, with the University of Toronto defeating the Parkdale CanoeClub before 3,807 fans. The game generated revenues of $2,616.40 for the Canadian Rugby Union.
Competition for the Cup was suspendedfor a few years, because of the First World War, and then in 1919 over a rules dispute. The Roaring Twenties saw teams from Western Canada participate in the Championship for the first time. In the 1930s, the Grey Cup Trophy migrated West when Winnipeg won it in 1935. Inthe 1940s, despite suspension of play in the professional ranks between 1942 and 1944 because of the Second World War, service teams competed for the Cup. Following the war, the game of football, and theGrey Cup in particular, grew increasingly popular among Canadians. The 1948 Grey Cup is generally recognized as the beginning of the modern Grey Cup era, when Calgary Stampeders* fans descended upon the streets of Toronto in full western regalia. Thereafter, Canadians flocked each year to the host city to participate in the festivities surrounding the big game.
In the 1950s, amateur participation ended and the Canadian Football League (CFL) emerged as Canadian professional football's governing body. Today, the game is attended by fans from every corner of the country, and each year it is one of the most watched televised sports events of any kind in Canada.
