Metropolis, Canada : Superman's canadian connection
A young Toronto boy stands on a downtown sidewalk in the 1920s, amazed by the futuristic beauty of the growing capital of Ontario, Canada. In the pages of the newspapers he sells on a street corner, he discovers the alternate realities offered by another new wonder : the comic strip - a wonderlan where heroes, villains and aliens battle in the broad universe of imagination.
Illustrtor Joe Shuster was such a boy. He would move from Toronto, Ontario, to Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of 10 and eventually meet a like-minded young American named Jerry Siegel. Together, they would create one of the world's most memorable comic book characters and the city he serves : Superman and Metropolis.
When Joe Shuster closed his eyes to picture the bustling city of Metropolis, it was the Toronto skyline that filled his mind. In theearly years, Clark Kent works for the Daily Star, not the Daily Planet as the name would eventually become - a tribute to theToronto Star that had been so formative for the Superman illustrator, opening his mind to the amazing world of the comic strip.
Over time, as Superman's popularity exploded, the superhero and hiscity evolved as new generations of writers and illustrators took up the mantle. But the foundations of his character and his world are forever tied to the origins of the men who first gave them life.
