Canadair CP-107 Argus

Fitted with extensive electronic equipement for it's anti-submarine warfare role, the Argus was one of the most sophisticated combat aircraft of it's time. It first took the skies in 1957 and entered service with the Royal Canadian Air Force the following year. Powered by four huge piston engines, its high power maximum fuel economy gave it long range and endurance. A specially strengthened airframe enabled it to withstand the rigours of low-level flying. The Argus boasted an advanced navigational system - the Air Navigational and Tactical Control System - which made it the most effective ASW aircraft of its day. The CP-107 Argus flew it's last mission in 1981.

The cameo features the portrait of W.S. Longhurst, who made on March 28, 1957 with his crew, the first test flight of the Argus prototype, R.C.A.F. 20710 at Cartiervile, Quebec.

The reverse of the coin was designed by Toronto artist, Peter Mossman. The brother of a World War II flier, Mossman has always loved airplanes and has made a speciality of aviation art. As well as many paintings that hang in the Canadian War Museum and a number of squadron messes, Mossmanm also designed the Havilland Beaver aviation coin.
This coin is the seventeenth issue of Aviation collection and contains 20 coins that have been released between 1990 and 1999.
