The Chinese lunar calendar was first introduced by Emperor Huan Ti in 2637 BC; a cycle of twelve years, each named after a different animal. Legends abound how the zodiacs were chosen. Some believe Lord Buddha summoned the animals to bid him farewell when he parted the Earth and rewarded his loyal subjects by naming a year after them - the Year of the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
