The year 2012 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II - a celebration around the world of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty's succession to the throne.
Canada has been plannig its commemorative activities, including celebratory holidays, events and artworks, since 2007, building on the significant success of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations in 2002 - a highlight of which, for many Canadians, was the image of Queen Elizabeth II and Wayne Gretsky together dropping the first puck at an NHL hockey game in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Celebrations in Canada, as around the world, acknowledge Queen Elizabeth II's lifetime dedication and service to her subjects, to the Commonwealth, and to innumerable charitable causes.
Queen Elizabeth II is one of the only two British monarchs to have celebrated her Diamond Jubilee; the other monarch was Queen Victoria, who celebrated her Diamond Jubileein 1897.
