En l'an 1327, dans une abbaye bénédictine du nord de l'Italie, plusieurs moines sont retrouvés morts. Pour mettre un terme à ces inquiétantes disparitions avant l’arrivée d’une importante délégation de l’Église, le frère Guillaume de Baskerville tente de lever le voile sur ce mystère qui attise toutes les superstitions. Assisté par son jeune secrétaire Adso de Melk, il va progressivement percer à jour les troubles secrets de la congrégation, et se heurter à la ferme interdiction d’approcher la bibliothèque de l’édifice. Pourtant, Baskerville en est persuadé, quelque chose se trame entre ses murs. Et bientôt, à la demande du pape, l'inquisiteur Bernardo Gui se rend à son tour au monastère et s'immisce dans l’enquête. Les morts s’accumulent et la foi n’est d’aucun secours…
Événement ! Milo Manara s’attelle à l’adaptation en deux tomes du chef d’œuvre d’Umberto Eco, vendu à plusieurs millions d’exemplaires et traduit en 43 langues. Après Jean-Jacques Annaud au cinéma (1986), c’est un nouvel artiste de prestige qui s’empare du célébrissime polar médiéval. À la demande des héritiers Eco, Manara a eu carte blanche pour donner sa vision de l’œuvre, et a pour cela choisi un triple parti pris graphique très audacieux. Son adaptation s’ouvre en effet sur Umberto Eco lui-même s’adressant au lecteur, dessiné dans un noir et blanc classique. Puis commence l’intrigue médiévale elle-même, et là Manara renoue avec le noir et blanc au lavis, rehaussé d’effets de matières et de modelés qu’il a déjà utilisé pour Le Caravage. Enfin, chacun sait que les livres tiennent un rôle fondamental dans l’intrigue, et Manara s’amuse donc de temps à autre à recréer des enluminures d’époque, réalisées à la manière des moines copistes du Moyen Âge. L’ensemble est mis en couleurs par la propre fille de Manara sous la supervision de son père, là aussi selon la même méthode qui a présidé à la réalisation du Caravage.

| Beautiful and compelling | |
| This was of particular interest to me as a fan of the novel and of the 1980s movie by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Milo Manara, although mostly associated with erotica, has so often shown an attention to detail that is impressive and sometimes staggering. This is only part of the story, but Manara captures most of the essence of the story and themes beautifully (or horrifically when appropriate). The artist's interpretations of Adso's feverishly sacred imagination and visions are spot-on, in my opinion. The darkness, hope, beauty, sexuality and divine themes are lovingly illustrated here. I do look forward to the next tome. | |

| Lorsque Manara s'associe à un scénario remarquable, il excelle. Le dessein et sa coloration sont sublimes. Il a des interprétations du roman qui diffèrent du film de Jean-Jacques Annaud comme la rencontre entre le jeune moine et la sauvageonne dans la cuisine du monastère. Est-ce que la chevelure de la jeune suggère celle de la Méduse ? Car à sa vue, le jeune moine est pétrifié. | |
