Description
The Prize of an Inland Sea - 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Hudson's Bay (1610-2010)
For hundreds of years, the lure of inexhaustible wealth inspired many European explorers to seek out faster trade routes to Asia. They sailed south, but when it was discovered that an immense continent lay in the way, expeditions began probing the North in search of a northwest passage.
John Cabot... Martin Frobisher... John Davis... generations of explorers sailed into the frozen unknown, each building upon the discoveries of his fore runners. More than a century after Cabot, Henry Hudson began his quest, plotting a course across the North pole but impenetrable ice turned him back on two separate occasions. The following year, he exploredthe east coast of North America where he discovered the Hudson River before returning to Europe.
Then, in April 1610, Discovery sailed from London (England).[...]
Finally, at the start of August, the strait opened up. Hudson believed he had reached the Pacific Ocean, but he was mistaken; his expedition was locked in a vast inland bay that looked deceptively like the open sea. The Spice Islands remained ever-elusive, but Hudson had far out distanced his predecessors. His discovery proved to be of immeasurable value by opening up the continent's interior to England's expanding fur trade. This coin is part of the 100-dollar coin collection which began in 1976. A coin has been released every year since then.
