Description
75th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize For the Discovery of Insulin
In the spring of 1921, Banting traveled to Toronto to explain his idea to J.J.R. Macleod, Professor of Physiology at the University of Toronto, and asked Macleod if he could use his lab space to test the idea. Initially skeptical, Macleod eventually agreed and supplied Banting with ten test animals (dogs) and two medical students, Charles Best, as lab assistant. In December 1921, Macleod invited the biochemist James Collip to help with this task, and, within a month, the team felt ready for a clinical test. In January 1922 they make their first test on a human and it work. In 1923, Banting and Macleod won the Nobel prize for the discovery of the insulin.
This coin is part of the 100-dollar coin collection which began in 1976. A coin has been released every year since then.
