Description
75th Game in the Wordl's Longest Running International Hockey Series
Charged with the responsability of shaping America's military leaders, General Douglas MacArthur felt a hockey match would be an effective way to foster goodwill between two national military school.
In 1921, he approached Lieutenant-General Sir Archibald Macdonell, Commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario with his idea. The two exchanged ideas on how the series would be managed and in 1923 the Royal Military College of Canada hockey team travelled to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, to play against the West Points Cadets.
This friendly game between gentlemen was celebrated with tea dances and church parades, but once the men were on the ice, spirits quickly intensified. It was a hard fought game that Royal Military College of Canada won with a score of 3-0. Reported as some of the best hockey seen in years, both teams eagerly awaited their rematch the following year.
In 2006, the 75th face off in this on going competition will be played out in Canada, As such, it is the longest running international hockey series in the world - two academic teams delivering some of the best hockey fans can hope to see as they battle it out for national pride.
This coin is part of the 100-dollar coin collection which began in 1976. A coin has been released every year since then.
