When Alfred Pellan (1906-1988) left Quebec City to study art in Paris, he was immediately drawn to the Surrealists, a new group of artists that believed art no longer needed to portray the physical world, but could begin to explore the more profound realities that lay in the subconscious. In 1948, Pellan interpreted part of Paul Éluard's poem Les Petits Justes. In his drawing Fragments, Pellan played on the words of the original title to create an evocative image of the "sweet nothings" that are exchanged between a woman and a man. The poem reads, "Was she stone?She caved in." and in PellanÆs drawing a woman made of stone blocks disintegrates before a bedazzled man.
