Description
Samuel De Champlain
Though there is no known confirmed portrait of Champlain, your coin image presents him as he is frequently portrayed in artistic depictions, with long dark hair, long moustache and trimmed beard, sporting a feathered cap andthe jacket, hose, and pantaloons of the era. In his right hand, Champlain carries his astrolabe, famously thought to have been lost on a portage through the Calumet rapids near Cobden, Ontario - though this story has been largely discredited. In his left, he holds a notebook, which is believed to have held his maps and drawings. He looks toward the left of the image as he steps forward, his back turned to the waterway and distant tree-lined shore behind him.
This coin is part of the 200-dollar coin collection which began in 1990. A coin has been released every year since then. However, the Royal Canadian Mint has released many sub-series in this collection.
This coin is the third issue of the Great Explorers of Canada sub-series.
The first coin of the series, released in 2012, depicts the Vikings.
The second coin of the series, released in 2013, depicts Jacques Cartier.
The third coin of the series, released in 2014, depicts Samuel De Champlain.
The fourth coin of the series, released in 2015, depicts Henry Hudson.
The fifth coin of the series, released in 2016, depicts Pierre Gaultier de la Vérendrye.
The sixth and last coin of the series, released in 2017 depicts Alexander Mackenzie.
