Description
The Silver Dart
The Silver Dart was the fourth and finest of the pioneer machines constructed by AerialExperiment Association (A.E.A.) headed by Dr. Alexander Graham Bell. It was first tested in New York State in December 1908 before being shipped to Baddeck on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia for further flyingexperiments. On February 23, 1909, it first flew for over half a mileabove a frozen Bras d'Or Lake, thus achieving the first powered, controlled, heavier-than-air machines flight in Canada.
Shown on the left side of the gold cameo is the portrait of John A.D.McCurdy, principal designer and pilot of the Silver Dart. Also portrayed in the cameo is F.W. (Casey) Baldwin, the first Canadian to have flown previous prototypes : the Red Wing at Hammondsport, New York on March 12, 1908 and his own design, the White Wing, on May 18 of the same year.
This coin is the third issue of Aviation collection and contains 20 coins that have been released between 1990 and 1999.
AVIATION - A.E.A. SILVER DART - 1991 CANADIAN COINS 03 is categorised COINS AND PAPER MONEY / 08- ROYAL CANADIAN MINT / 17- MEANS OF TRANSPORT and sold by l'Imaginaire, a store and specialised website.
