The bright and colorful wing patterns of butterflies are a marvel. And every summer, people around the world are witness to a fluttering art show asthese natural works of art take flight. Antartica is the only continent without butterflies.
Of the 24,000 species in the world, Canada in home to 297 of them, including the Silvery Blue (Galucopsyche lygdamus). There are about adozen subspecies of Silvery Blue but only one of them is found in Canada - subspecies couperi. It occurs in every province and territory as far north to Tuktoyaktuk (Northwest Territories) but is rarely seen in southwestern Ontario. A single generation of Silvery Blue flies each season; from early May to early July in the south and from mid-June to mid-August in Newfoundland and the north.
Two coins were released each year in this series from 2004 to 2006: one coloured, and one with an hologram.

- the Monarch, released in 2005;
- the Short-tailled Swallowtail, released in 2006.
