The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth
Celebrating 100 Years of the Calgary Stampede
When the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair in 1886, organizers were thrilled that 500 of the area's 2,000 residents came out to view the exhibitions and attractions. Atthe time, participants could not know that they were sharing in an event that would one day attract more than a million visitors to Calgary, Alberta each year.

One Rider, One Bronc, Eight Seconds, and Two Million Eyes
Although today's Calgary Stampede includes dozens of events and shows, its heart remains in the rodeo arena. This unmatched event features the world's premier bucking stock, the planet's best rodeo competitors, and over two million dollars in prize money.
One of the rodeo's most exciting events - and biggest draws for rodeo fans - is bareback bronc riding. The most physically demanding of the Stampede's major rodeo events, bareback riding requires that the rider use only one arm to grip a customized rawhide handhold attached to a leather rigging circling the body of a bucking bronco. The riding arm absorbs most of the horse's power.
Horse and rider combine for a total score out of 100 possible points. The rider is judged on his control during the eight second ride and on his spurring technique. The bareback rider leans well back and tries toreach as far forward as he can with his feet, then rolls his spurs back up towards the rigging. At the same time, he must keep from being pulled away from his handhold. Higher marks are awarded to the rider who is best able to coordinate his spurring with the horse's action.
This wild looking ride is actually a fine duet between horse and rider - testing each others abilities.
CALGARY STAMPEDE - 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CALGARY STAMPEDE - 2012 CANADIAN COINS is categorised COINS AND PAPER MONEY / 08- ROYAL CANADIAN MINT / 13- CANADIAN HISTORY and sold by l'Imaginaire, a store and specialised website.
