Introduction of Curling to North America, 1760
This coin, designed by Brian Hughes, celebrates the introduction of curling to North America in 1760. While there is no official documentation to this effect, it is widely accepted within the historical community that curling was brought to North America by Scottish settlers and soldiers during the time of the Seven Year War (1756-63). Apparently, soldiers stationned in Quebec during the winter of 1759/60 melted down a French cannon and moulded the metal into curling irons - hence, the prevalence of 1760 as curling's inaugural year in North America. The terminology used in this sport (bonspiel, curl and rink) suggests curling originated in Holland, Germany or other European Low Countries, while history alludes to Scotland with its account of King James IV (1475-1513) who offered a silver curling stone as an annual prize.
This coin is the tenth of the Canadian Sports Firsts Series that contains 12 coins. Four were released in 1998, four in 1999 and four in 2000.
CANADIAN SPORTS FIRSTS - CURLING - 2000 CANADIAN COINS 10 is categorised COINS AND PAPER MONEY / 08- ROYAL CANADIAN MINT / 16- SPORTS and sold by l'Imaginaire, a store and specialised website.
