Queen ofthe Sea - The Marco Polo - 150th Anniversary
The Marco Polo was launched on April 17, 1851 in Saint John, New Brunswick. Neither a clipper nor a barque, she was best described as an innovative combination of the two.
The Marco Polo began to rewrite navalrecord books the moment she departed on her maiden voyage, deliveringa full load of lumber to Liverpool, England in a mere 15 days. The following year, her reputation as the fastest ship in the world was secured when the Marco Polo circumnavigated the globe in a roundtrip England-Australia passenger voyage that lasted 5 months and 21 days - a significantly faster time than the standard 7 months.
The Marco Polo's success greatly increased the popularity of Canadian-built ships. She continued carrying passengers for another 15 years before returning to her original duties as a cargo ship. The Marco Polo met her fatein 1883 when a storm ran her aground at Cape Cavendish, Prince EdwardIsland.
This coin is the fifth issue of the Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
