The canoe was a key form of transportation for Canada's First Nations for thousands of years.The kenu (meaning dugout) existed in many forms. During the fur trade, the wooden, bark-covered structure gained popularity as European explorers pushed west across the continent. Today, the canoe is purely recreational; dipping a paddle into still, clear waters is a classic summer pastime.
