Shooting Star, Crouching Panther:
Tecumseh (c.1768-1813)

The great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was born near Springfield, Ohio. His name, which meant both "shooting star" and "crouching panther," proved prescient, for he became a highly driven and dynamic leader and warrior.

In 1811, after an unsuccessful meeting with Indiana Territory Governor William Charles Harrison, Tecumseh left to gather support from Native groups further south. With Tecumseh absent from Tippecanoe, Harrison dispatched troops to attack thesettlement, knowing that Teskwatawa was a more volatile leader likelyto provide the escalation Harrison needed to raze Tippecanoe. The result was a battle which, while costing both sides similar losses, ultimately led to the destruction of the settlement. This loss initially weakened the First Nations peoples? faith in unification but ultimately showed them that they could match the mettle of American troops, thus feeding their determination to defend their way of life.
