Description
The Great Response - Canada's National War Memorial
In Ottawa near the Parliament buildings, an armyof bronze figures rises from Confederation Square. They are moving through an archway, a look of eagerness and sincerity on their faces - they are answering the call to serve.
There are twenty-two bronze figures in the procession, each one 2,44 m (8 ft) tall, roughly one-third larger than life size. The youthful faces among them illustrate the fact that many enlisted while still under age. They foughtand died before they had lived to be 18 years old.
Unveiled in 1939 to commemorate the hundreds of thousands of men and women who served in the "war to end all wars" (WWI) the dates of1939-1945 and 1950-1953 were added later to pay homage to those who marched into action during the Second World War and the Korean War. Still, there are countless others - past, present and future - that choose to serve a noble cause and put themselves in harms way for freedom. The National War Memorial is a tribute to them all.
This coin is the first issue of the National War Memorials series.
The first coin of the series, released in 2006, depicts the National War Memorial.
The second coin of the series, released in 2006, depicts the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland memorial.
The third and the last coin of the series, released in 2007, depicts the Vimy Ridge.
