Testaments of the Ice Age
Thousands of years ago, snow falls upon the ground. Under the chill of the Ice Age, it doesn't melt. Instead, it is compressed into ice as layer upon layer of snow builds up.
Over centuries, an ice cap forms. Large enough to cover continents, it spreads out towards the sea.
The earth warms. Frozen seas turn to water. Tides and waves rise up against the shores, against the mountains of ancient ice. A fracture builds. The glacier breaks - an iceberg is born!
An island in its own right, it is carried away by the Baffin Current. And when these waters meet the Labrador Current, theiceberg begins to travel south.
Between ten and forty thousands icebergs are "calved" from the glaciers of western Greenland every year. Those that are large enough to survive the three-year voyage willmake a breathtaking entrance into "Iceberg Alley" off the coast of Newfoundland.
