The drum dance

Designed by Inuit artist Germaine Arnaktauyok, the coin celebrates the creation of the new territory, Nunavut. The drum dance, one of the oldestand most traditional forms of Inuit music and performance, is still very much part of modern Inuit life. Drumming, as the focal point of gatherings, remains integral to both social and spiritual life. On the occasions when the entire community meets, either for impromptu feasts or for annual celebrations, joys and triumphs are shared through drumming, dancing and singing, strengthening a sense of collective well being. At the same time, knowledge is passed on through the songs of the drummer which tell of ancestors and legends, personal experiences and hunting adventures.

The drum dance is linked with Inuit spiritual life. Its solemn, hypnotic rhythms would aid the shaman into trances in which they performed supernatural feats or communicated with the spirit world. Culturally, its importance goes far beyond entertainmentto reflect and express the values of the society.

The drum signifies that the people will be heard near and far and features a map outlining Nunavut. Inside the map is a kudliq, a stone lamp that servesas a source of warmth and provides a sense of security.

This coin is the second issue of the commemorative silver 2-dollar collection.
The first coin of the serie, released in 1996, commemorates the Introduction of the 2$ coin.
The second coin of the serie, released in 1999, commemorates the Formation of Nunavut.
