Description
125th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
This year the proof silver dollar, designed by artist Adeline Halvorson, commemorates the 125th anniversary of the founding of the North-West Mounted Police. At the time of confederation in 1867, cadada consisted to only four eastern provinces. In 1870, the government acquired a huge expense of land from the Hudson's Bay Company. Plans to open the region to settlement required the suppression of the wiskeytrade and the establishment of peaceful relations with the Native people. In May 1873, the North-West Mounted Police was created to bring law, order and Canadian authority to the western frontier. The reverse of the coin features a mounted member of that early force which, in 1920, was transformed into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The obverse bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
