The commemorative silver dollar marks the 325th anniversary of the founding of the Hudson's Bay Company. Its story begins with theadventurous "coureurs des bois" Medard Chouart (Sieur des Groseillers) and Pieere-Esprit Radisson who led a trading expedition from Englandto theNew World via Hudson Bay in 1668. Further to the success of this venture, king Charles II granted a Royal Charter to the "Governor and the Compagy of Adenturers of England", which became the Hudson's BayCompany. The charter was signed on May 2, 1670, in London, England. Today, itis preserved in the company's Corporate Head Office in Toronto.The design, by Canadian artist Vincent McIndoe, depicts Radisson and des Groseilliers, the ship "Nonsuch" that brought the traders to the shores of Hudson Bay, ans Charles Fort, the original trading post whichwas later renamed "Rupert's House".
