Description
To Dream Upon a Sail - The Brigantine
The brigantine was a popular sight at sea during the "Golden Age of Sail." This two-masted ship was square-rigged on the foremast with fore- and afs-sails on the main (second) mast. The square rigallowed the ship to take advantage of steady trade winds and currentswhile the fore- and aft-sails were set lenghways along the boat so the ship could sail closer into the wind. This combination made the brigantine ideal for coastal sailing where winds are more variable. It wasan effective ship for the seal hunt and also as a trade vessel to theWest Indies and Brazil.
Every ship was designed to exploit certain advantages. Whether it was speed, maneuverability, cargo capacity or case of handling, the small and handly brigantine played an important role in the marine history of North America.
Perhaps this is why these magnificent vessels have such a powerful allure. Despite the modern ability to travel faster, higher and deeper,we are transfixed every time they grace Canadian ports. We are reminded of the importance of dreams. After all, our nation was born upon the tall ship's sail.
This coin is the third issue ofthe Tall Ships collection.
The first coin of the series, released in 2005, depicts the Three-Masted Ship.
The second coin of the series, released in 2006, depicts the Ketch.
The third and the last coin of the series, released in 2007, depicts the Brigantine.
