Description
To Dream Upon a Sail - Ketch
One of theships popular in the old world was the Ketch. The Ketch was a two-masted sailing vessel that was developed in Europe during the middle of the 17th century. A fore and aft rigged vessel, the Ketch is similar toa yawl but the mizzen mast is ahead of the rudder.
Themain advantage for the Ketch depicted here was the reduced crew size and the fact that this trading ketch could easily navigate smaller andshallower harbours. While it was certainly capable of blue-water sailing, the ketch was generally used for coastal trading. A few ketches could be seen sailing along de St. Lawrence during the latter 19th and early 20th century, much like the vessel depcited on this coin, however they eventually gave way to ships better suited for the Canadian seaways, such as the Schooner.
Though the Ketch had lost its appeal as a trading ship, they have returned today as popular sailing yachts.
This coin is the second issue of the Tall Ships collection.
The first coin of the series, released in 2005,depicts the Three-Masted Ship.
The second coin of the series, released in 2006,depicts the Ketch.
The third and the last coin of the series, released in 2007,depicts the Brigantine.
