2012: Bicentennial of the War of 1812

The War of 1812 was a fundamental turning point in Canada?s history: it profoundly influenced British North America?s (Canada?s) sense of identity and united French- and English-speaking inhabitants, Aboriginal communities, farmers, soldiers, artisans, and others, in an effort to preserve their ways of life from American
invasion.
From the struggle emerged exceptional accounts of some of Canada?s proudest moments. These stories and the heroes that arose from them exemplified the extraordinary characteristics required to defend British North America, and have become important symbols and enduring narratives in the history and evolution of today?s Canada.

Push On, Brave Volunteers!
The Battle of QueenstonHeights

The United States of America declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812, in an attempt to force the British to respectAmerican sovereignty on the high seas and to prevent the British frominterfering in their expansion westward. Many Americans wanted to annex British North America, believing that they would either easily defeat the Canadians or be welcomed by them. Those living in the region known today as Canada, however, had a different take: they believed American control would threaten their independence and way of life, and intended to powerfully resist the invasion.

The first major battle of the war, the Battle of Queenston Heights, did not begin well for British troops and their allies. Before dawn on October 13, 1812, a large American army crossed the Niagara River at Queenston, several kilometres upriver from Fort George. They planned to capture Niagara as part of a campaign to drive the British from southern Upper Canada.
