Description
Lake Huron
Lake Huron, bordered by the province of Ontario on its eastern shore and the state of Michigan on its western shore, is the second-largest of the five Great Lakes and the fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world. First Nations people, includingthe Hurons for whom the lake is named, have inhabited Lake Huron and its surrounding watershed for at least 2,000 to 3,000 years. The European 'discovery' of the lake was made by Samuel de Champlain in 1615, accompanied by Étienne Brulé and their First Nations guides.
Lake Huron is fed by a number of rivers as well as the Strait of Mackinac that joins Huron with Lake Michigan. According to some experts, Lakes Huron and Michigan are, hydrologically, a single body of water: Lake Michigan-Huron. This two-sided water mass, were it formally recognized as a single body of water, would be the world's largest freshwater lake. This massive water system drains into Lake Erie through the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers.
This coin is the fifth issue of the Great Lakes collection.
The first coinof the series, released in November 2013, depicts the Lake Superior.
The second coin of the series, released in March 2014, depicts the Lake Ontario.
