The proud Polar Bear
2nd coin of the series Wildlife in Stamp and Coin.
The King of the North, the proud polar bear reigns over the ice-packed Canadian Arctic. The largest bear on earth,this titan of the tundra can reach heights of up to 2 m and can weighmore than 800 kg. Thought to have descended from the grizzly, polar bears have evolved to thrive in this inhospitable environment. Polar bear skin is black to absorb heat and its long thick fur is hollow and translucent to trap warm air near its body. Other adaptations have madeit a formidable presence on land or in water. In spite of its immensesize, the polar bear is extremely agile and can sprint 40 km/h on land allowing it to catch swift prey such as foxes, lemmings and birds. The polar bear is also renowned as the most powerful four-footed swimmer in the animal kingdom.
