The Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-27 variable geometry fighter-bomber (NATO code Flogger D) was developed by the Soviet aerospace industry based on the structure of the Mig-23 fighter to make it more suitable for conducting effective ground attacks and close support missions. The aerodynamic layout is essentially that of the Mig-23 fighter, but it differs in the new nose configuration. To better fulfill the new role assigned to the aircraft, the onboard avionics were updated with the installation of radar systems for detection, target acquisition, and ground targeting, as well as the adoption of new electronic countermeasure systems. The offensive armament was also upgraded with the addition of a new 6-barrel 30mm cannon, more powerful than the one on the Mig-23, and the capability to carry an offensive payload, including new air-to-ground missiles, with a total weight of over 4,000 kg.
