In 1977, Renault made its debut with its own team in the F1 World Championship. The team introduced important technological innovations into the world of competition. For the 1980 season, the team entered the Renault RE20 equipped with a Renault Gordini EF1 V6 turbo engine delivering 520hp. The team was entirely French with its two drivers Jean-Pierre Jabouille, race number 15 and René Arnoux race number 16.

During the season, the team obtained three victories at the Brazilian, South African and Austrian GPs. The Renault RE20 was constantly improved before being replaced by the new RE30 after the first five races of the 1981 season.
