Description
2010 1-DOLLAR - CANADIAN NAVY CENTENNIAL - SET OF FIVE COINS
"Ready aye ready"
A century of ingenuity in the face of crisis
Within hours of a massive earthquake ravaging Haiti in January 2010, the Canadian Navy's HMCS Halifax and HMCS Athabaskan raced to provide humanitarian aid. They remained station for two months aiding and enablinghumanitarian efforts.
The Canadian Navy's swift response to Haiti's unexpected disaster was a fitting representationof a century of rapide responses to crises. Since its beginning, Canada's Navy has, over and over, successfully adapted to meet the numerous challenges thrown in its path.
First Steps
Canada grew to nationhood as part of the Bristish Empire, under the protection of British armed forces. The Canadian Navy was founded in 1910 to strenghten the Empire in the face of a dangerous ongoing naval arms race between Germany and Great Britain. However, enthusiasm for the new Navy was lukewarm; by 1911, with Sir Wilfrid Laurier's Liberal government swept from power, Robert Borden's Conservative government brought Canada's naval growth to a grinding halt. Canadians, it was thought, were not keen to see their limited resources spent on so many expensive warships and personnel. Was it necessary, since the world's most powerful navy - the Royal Navy - remained committed to being Canada's maritime guardian?
