Lumbering the wealth of a nation

From the very beginning ofEuropean settlement in Canada, wood was an essential resource for building and heating homesteads, but has the Napoleonic War raged in Europe and England hunered for wood to build warships, this staple took onnew signifiance as a potential source of great wealth.

Tens ofthousands of men were drawn to the forest and a new industry began tospread across Canada - From Gaspe through the Great Lakes, to the Manitoba border. The forest seemed inexhaustible, but by the early 1880's, the forst lumbermen began arriving in British Columbia in search of new trees to replace the dwindling supply.

What awaited them took their breath away - giants twice as tall and five times thicker than the finest trees they had felled thus far. their eastern tools and methods seemed barely up to the task, but the inventive lumbermen adapted. Wooden skid roads replaced smooth ice and oxen teams grew from four to ten; two-man crosscut saws became longer and springboards facilitated cutting above the massive roots.

The lumbermen originated from all around the globe, but their muscle and spirit united them all- a love for adventure and a great admiration for the forest that continue to captivate a modern nation in the 21st century.
