The first vertical orientation banknote was released in late 2018 as a result of a two years public consultation process to design the note. The designs on both sides of the note showcase Canada's ongoing pursuit of social justice and rights and freedoms. This marks the first time that an iconic Canadian woman, Viola Desmond, is portrayed on a regular circulating Bank of Canada note.
