Men's speed skating was on the program at the 1924 Chamonix Olympic Winter Games in France. Women's events were added at the Squaw Valley 1960 Olympic Winter Games in California. Speed skating consists of ten individual events for the men and women over distances that range from 500 metres to 10,000 metres, and two team pursuit events. Canada's first Olympic speed skating medals, a total of five, were won at the Lake Placid 1932 Olympic Winter Games in New York. Most recently, Canadians performed exceptionally at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Italy, winning gold, silver and bronze medals.
From 2007 to 2010, fifteen twenty-five cent coins were issued to celebrate the 2010 Vancouver OlympicWinter Games. The series include ten winter sports designs, two paralympic special issues and three designs that represent previous Canadian Winter Olympics medals. Also, two Lucky Loon were issued as a good luck symbol to support canadian athletes in 2008 and 2010.
