The Canadian Vickers Vedette
The Canadian Vickers Vedette played an important role in the history of canadianaviation during 1920's. This pusher bigplane ``flying boat`` was developed mainly for forestry patrol and aerial photographic operations. Between the two World Wars, more Vickers Vedettes were manufacturedin this country than any other model. It also became the first aircraft to be manufactured in Canada for commercial operators.
The first prototype was completed for flight tests by November 1924 and entered a trial season of operation with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the summer of 1925. Minor alterations were made and the aircraft went into production for the R.C.A.F as the Vedette Mark II.
The design ont he reverse of the coin, by Canadian artist Robet R.Carmichael, depicts a Vedette flying over the Canadian Vickers factory of Montreal. The cameo portrays Wilfred T.Reid who played a major rolein the development of aircraft design in canada during the 1920'swith the Canadian Vickerws and Curtiss-Reid compagnies. in 1928, he created the Reid Aircraft Company and established an ``airpark`` at Cartierville, near Montreal.
This coin is the tenth issue of Aviation collection and contains 20 coins that havebeen released between 1990 and 1999.
