Canada's First Gold Coins

The history of the 1912-1914 Canadian gold coins is rooted in the story of Canada and the evolution of some of the country's most distinguished institutions.

The idea of domestic gold coinage for Canada began in the mid-nineteenth century, when Canada joined the international gold standard. While the move simplified trade, it also necessitated that the country have sufficient gold reserves to back its currency, which was convertible to gold on demand. This new standard helped to inspire the notion of coining gold in Canada at a domestic Mint.

Many of the Canadian gold coins produced from 1912 to 1914 became part of the government's gold reserves. In March of 1935, the newly formed Bank of Canada began collecting the gold coins from the Department of Finance and Canadian chartered banks. A vast number of the first Canadian gold coins remained in cloth bags in the Bank of Canada's vaults for over 75 years.

In 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint decidedto put back in circulation the first canadian gold coins, minted in1912-1913 and 1914. These coins, with a face value of 5 & 10 dollars, have been subdivised in two categories: hand-selected coins, and premium hand-selected coins. This 6-coin set includes only premium hand-selected coins.

Your coin set includes an official Certificate of Authenticity, as well as one of the original bags and tags that held and identified the coins in the Bank of Canada's vault.
