Unsuspecting nothern mountain hikers probably don't realize that their expedition is lined with beds of roses. Indeed, the tiny white andyellow mountain avens so familliar throughout Canada's  western mountain ranges, the Alps, and the Arctic are in fact dwarf members ofthe rose family.

Embodying the spirit of the rugged nothern environs in wich they flourish, these delicate and resilient flora rangeglobally from the Ukraine to Alaska and from Colorado well into the Arctic Circle, forming extensive mats strong enough to stabilize mountain slopes.

Named for the Greek oak-nymph, «Dryas(itallique)», this fascinating genus features short woody stems and evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves that closely resemble those of oak trees. They are one of the first flowers one sees following the last of winter's snows.Like miniature sunflowers, the cupped blooms turn on their stems, following the path of the sun across the sky and offering a warm, welcomeretreat for the many insects so crucial to pollination.
