A Tree in Bloom

The Design

The Pacific Dogwood (cornus nuttallii) became the floral emblem of BritishColumbia in 1956. However, this flower is actually the spring blossomof a 20 metre (70 foot) tree that grows in southern British Columbia,Washington and Oregon.

Upon close examination, the flower of the Pacific Dogwood reveals a cluster of smaller blooms, each consisting of four to six white petals. As if be deliberate design, the tree's branches grow to ensure each flower is fully exposed to achieve maximum pollination - a natural marvel that produces a breathtaking explosion of white that endures from April to June each year.
