Driving home a Canadian identity - Gray-Dort Model 25-SM (1923)
After 60 years of manufacturing horse-drawn vehicles and related parts, the William Gray and Sons Company Limited (Chatham, Ontario), saw demand for its products begin to wane in favour of the automobile. In response, the company set out to capitalize on this latest innovation and soon forged a partnership with Michigan-based Dort.
The first Gray-Dorts rolled off the production line and into the Canadian psyche in 1915. They were reliable and economical cars with a tough engine that was quick to start - a prized capability during harsh Canadian winters. Other features included luxurious upholstery, silk curtains, quality flooring, and more windows than other cars.
The 25-SMluxury model (1923) best embodies the spirit of the Gray-Dort's shortbut illustrious decade as Canada's quintessential car for 1920's. Oneof the first six-cylinder cars to be introduced, its T8000 engine wasexceptionally smooth and powerful for the time. The 25-SM can still be seen at Reynolds-Alberta Museum of Transportation in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
This coin is the seventh issue of the Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation andfour on the rail transportation.
