Critics scoffed at the sheer size of the William D. Lawrence. She would be too large too handle they said, a financial fiascothat would ruin her builder, William D. Lawrence.

Not one to be discouraged, Lawrence stood firm in his convictions. A key advocate for Nova Scotia's economic development during the 19th century, Lawrence wanted to memorialize his province's prominence in the marine affairs of the world. He would build a ship that Canada will always remember.

At 2,459 tons (2,498.3 tonnes) and a keel lenght of 244 ft 9in (74,7 m), the William D. Lawrence became the largest Canadian-built, full-rigged ship ever sail the seas. Against all predictions, she proved to fast and maneuverable as she reached speeds of 14 knots. Over a period of nine years, the William D. Lawrence carriedall kinds of cargo and earned a considerable profit - as well as an unforgettable place in Canada's marine history.

This coin is theeighth issue of the Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
