Shade and shelter - The Silver Maple

In Canada, the Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) occurs naturally in parts of New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, and is planted as an urban and street tree in many other areas of the country. The Silver Maple is a fast growing deciduous treethat can reach a height of 35m, with a diameter of 100cm and a lifespan of 130 years or more.

Silver Maples often have hollow trunks, so that in addition to providing shade to many an urban street, theyoffer shelter to animals such as squirrels and racoons. Often found near streams, swamps and lakeshores, Silver Maples also provide wood ducks and other birds with a place to nest.

Silver Maple is the first maple tree to bloom in North America, beginning as early as late February and continuing until May. Beautiful in autumn when its leavesturn a lovely muted yellow, in spring the Silver Maple is known for its heavy seed fall, having one of the maple's largest annual seed crops. Silver Maple fruits are winged seeds, designed by nature to be dispersed by wind, allowing the seeds to travel over long distances, littering every nearby street and yards in their path!
