Canada is renowned for its wildlife and natural resources. Its natural beauty echoes across the land,ever-changing to reflect the varied climate and geography that shape the continent from coast to coast to coast.

Equally diverse is the maple tree, Canada's national symbol. There are ten native speciesin Canada, each with distinct characteristics perfectly adapted to the environment in which it grwos. Two species, the vine and bigleaf maples, occur only in British Columbia. The Douglas maple can be considered a third "western", species that can also be found in the mountains of western Alberta. The remaining seven species (the mountain, striped, red, silver, sugar, black and Manitoba maples) grow in one or more of the remaining provinces from Alberta to Newfoundland.

As spring gives birth to summer and autumn surrenders to the dormancy of winter, the maple changes and adapts in perfect rhythm. In spring, fields and forests bustle with activity as birds flit about gathering materials for their nests. Maple buds burst forth with equal urgency, revealing fresh young leaves eager to soak up the nurturing rays of the sun. In summer, its deep green leaves gather the sun's energy in preparation for the leaner seasons that inevitably lie ahead - just like the Monarch butterfly that rests momentarily before beginning its epic migration south. In autumn, the changing colours of its leaves beckon admirers onto hiking paths to relish the breathtaking scene; the best vantage point on a shoreline to watch colours dance on the water. By winter, the last of the crimson foliage has fallen to the ground, giving the rich textures of the maple's bark new prominence against a white landscape.
