Sculpture of sand and stone

The sculptor began its work over 600 million years ago, washing rocks and pebbles from the mountains into a valley below. Over millennia, they were crushed and compressed into sandstone. And as the continents shifted, these layers of sandstone, conglomerate and shale were pushed upwards on an angle.

Then, a mere 13,000 years ago, the glaciers began to melt. The valley filled with water and the seawater rose. Pulled by the gravity of the sun and the moon, it began to move, flowing in and out of the valley. It caressed the shoreline and filled the vertical cracks in the cliffs, carrying away bits of rock each time until huge blocks of stone stood alone, separated from the shore.

Twice a day, 200 billion tonnes of water swirl around the base of these rocks, sculpting distinctive shapes thatpeople call "flowerpots". Some see legends carved into rock. Others hear haunting sounds booming deep within the sea caves.

Every time the water flows out of the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, it reveals a hidden landscape of unimaginable artistry. Its sculptures may be ancient, but they are far from complete. Nature's creation is always ongoing.
