The Cup was donated by Governor General Lord Stanley in 1893 and soon became an integral part of hockey's heritage. The design on the reverse of the coin, by Canadian artist Stewart Sherwood, portrays the Stanley Cup as it evolved from the early days of hockey to the present time.
