The Design
Struck to commemorate the opening of the Mint on January2, 1908, the specimen sets werethe first numismatic products to be offered bythe Royal Mint, Ottawa. They were presented in a handsome red leather boxstamped with these words in gold lettering: "First Coinage ofCanada/1908/Royal Mint Ottawa". In 1998, to commemorate the ninetiethanniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint, the Mint's master engravers havereproduced the original 1908 designs with an antique finish. The observe ofeach coin bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by artist Dora dePédery-Hunt.
