All six Canadian denominations of circulation coinage are represented in this 2023 Specimen Set, which includes a limited-edition specimen dollar (a set exclusive) that features one of Canada’s most endangered birds.

Each spring, the male greater sage-grouse puts on quite a show: it fans out its plumage, puffs (and pops) its chest and struts its stuff in hopes of attracting a mate. The elaborate courtship display has been captured on a coin that is exclusive to the 2023 Specimen Set issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. The 2023 specimen dollar’s design highlights the endangered status of a species that occupies just 7% of its historical range in Canada. Fewer than 250 remain in the wild, but thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and its partners, the greater sage-grouse stands a chance of strutting and dancing its way to repopulation.
